The Stories We Tell: How TV and Movies Long for and Echo the Truth
by Mike Cosper
Why does everyone love Seinfeld, Parks and Rec, The Office, and every feasible flavor of CSI and Law & Order? How do movies capture our attention and affection?
The stories we tell, watch, read and imagine reveal common themes and longings. In this book, Mike Cosper delves into these commonalities and puts forth, “that the motivation for our stories is deeply connected with the gospel, and by thinking about that connection, we can more deeply appreciate both.” He articulates pop culture in light of the Gospel.
I found this book helpful in seeing the gospel in all of life. In a helpful forward (A Word Before We Begin), Cosper points out that seeing the Gospel in a TV show or movie does not equate to an endorsement of that story, but it can show us the Gospel longings and tragic failure of those stories without the redemptive story and presence of Christ.
